Sunday Workshops: Future Personas

Our day began with a sprint to finalize our research protocol and add finishing touches to our digital workshop before participants arrived. Two of our classmates Xuehui and Yueru had generously agreed to be our test subjects for this workshop before we ran it through with our participants. In total by the end of the day we would run three workshops. …

The topic I signed up for in this project is, “Ignored, Scorned, Vindicated: The maverick scientists whose heretical ideas were ultimately proven correct.” On an initial pass without any research a few things come to mind. Tesla’s work was certainly revolutionary but hotly contested by his peers due to competition. Most famously my mind goes to Edison VS Tesla on whether AC or DC were safer. This led to Edisons flashy murdering of an elephant to falsely prove that DC was safer which in reality it is not. While this is certainly a maverick type of behavior it…

Important things to keep in mind for this covid testing are the different types of testing available. How these test function aa well as their efficiency. I don’t fully grasp why this is considered difficult to visualize yet but I suspect it has to do with their distribution and how often or little one actually needs to be tested in order to ensure an accurate reading. There have certainly been many false negative cases.

First things first on communicating effectively for covid testing, I need to explain how it works. There’s three types of tests, two are diagnostic and one…

Designing Medical Devices for Healing Interactions

Tell us about the thesis: who did it, where, when, and what is it about?

Shannon Impellicceiri submitted Designing Medical Devices for Healing Interactions to Carnegie Mellon in 2015 for her Masters in Interaction Design. This thesis is about the interactions patients have with complex medical devices related to dialysis. While these devices are revolutionary in how they can help patients physically they unintentionally have imbued patients with a feeling of not having control over their bodies and lives.

Responding to the Toy Exercise

Going through all of the toys in class was an interesting experience in what it taught me. I took it as a microcosm for the work we will be doing in this year. How something looks, acts and plays with conventions really can influence how a user will perceive it. Some parts of the exercise were more obvious such as predicting how things would move and how it would sound. These aligned with a lot of our previous experiences and biases. The most interesting part was the more subtle ways that these objects played with…
